- What is Radial Spherical Bearing? -
Today’s newsletter will introduce radial spherical bearings, specifically those known as GE Bearings. |
*Radial spherical bearings consist of a convex spherical inner ring and a concave spherical outer ring.
They are plain bearings primarily designed to accommodate radial loads but can also handle some axial loads and are widely used in various applications with vibration or rotational motion. |
* Radial: Pertaining to the direction that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation or operation, focusing on movements or actions that radiate outward from the center of a circle or sphere. |
Types of Radial Spherical Bearings
< Operating Temperature > |
The temperature range without a seal is from -50℃ to +150℃, and when a seal is installed, the operating temperature is limited to -30℃ to 130℃. Exceeding the operating temperature may result in a reduction of the allowable load. |
Steel-on-Steel spherical bearings can be used without lubrication when the load is relatively small and the speed is slow. However, to minimize friction, wear, and corrosion, it is advisable to lubricate them regularly. |
Depending on the operating environment, using lithium complex grease (NLGI grade 2) or grease with EP (Extreme Pressure) additives, or containing molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), can help extend the lifespan of the bearings. |
In the case of Steel-on-PTFE Fabric spherical bearings, PTFE particles migrate onto the inner race steel surface. Lubrication can interfere with the movement of PTFE and may decrease the lifespan of the bearing. Therefore, lubrication is not recommended. |
Principally, bearings made from PTFE composite materials do not require lubrication. However, in environments where corrosion protection is necessary, it's recommended to install seals and fill the surrounding space with lithium-based grease. |

Recommended Assembly Tolerances and Precautions
< Recommended Assembly Tolerances > |
1) Recommended Shaft Tolerances |
2) Recommended Housing Tolerances |
To facilitate easier assembly, it is recommended to chamfer the ends of the pin or shaft and the edges of the housing bore by 10-20°. This allows for easier insertion of the bearing and minimizes the risk of damaging the mating surfaces. Additionally, when assembling bearings with split outer races, positioning the split surfaces at 90° from the primary load direction helps prevent bearing twisting and reduces bearing lifespan under heavy loads. |
Split-type bearings for outer races undergo a splitting process after machining to meet tolerances, which may result in slight deviations in concentricity. However, after mounting the housing, concentricity is restored according to specifications. |
The radial spherical bearings we introduced today are made to order items that go into production upon ordering. Maintenance-free bearings made of Steel/PTFE Fabric, Steel/PTFE composite material can also be customized to non-standard specifications. |
